Prologue
It all happened so fast. His mother was cooking Dinner in the Kitchen, his Father was watching the news while setting the table, and his sister was doing homework in the Living Room. Ryou was in his bedroom, biting his bottom lip slightly in concentration as he looked through his Duel Monsters cards. There was a competition coming up in a couple weeks.
Moments later, the shrill sound of the fire alarm beeping caused Ryou to snap his head up, looking around. He jumped up from his bed, cards flying all over, now forgotten. "Mum? Dad? Amane?!" Ryou called, looking around frantically for them.
Ryou's eyes widened at the fire that now engulfed the whole Kitchen and Living Room. He coughed, covering his mouth to try and prevent anymore smoke from entering his lungs. A sudden burst of fire errupted from the Kitchen area, causing Ryou to stumble back, losing his footing and hitting the ground.
Pain racked through Ryou's head from the impact, his lungs burning from the smoke, his eyes watering. The last thing Ryou thought, hoped and prayed for, was that his family got out okay; that they were fine.
*~*~*~*
The scene outside the apartment building was not a happy one. Firefighters worked hard to extinguish the blazing flames, police cars were scattered around, some officers holding back curious on-lookers.
Mr. Bakura held his wife and daughter close, both of them crying and watching the building with the hope that Ryou would be okay. They'd all gotten out fine, and thought Ryou was with them. A couple firefighters had gone in to find him. They'd been in there for almost ten minutes straight.
They looked up as one of the officers walked over. When he reached them, he removed his hat and bowed, and they knew instantly that something wasn't right. "Mr. Bakura, Mrs. Bakura, I'm afraid we have some bad news..."
