Chapter 1: Pay Day
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO
All around were the yells and screams of soldiers fighting, or dieing from the grenades and gunfire whizzing past their heads. “Sergeant what do we do now?” one of the soldiers said with panic in his voice. Bakura grabbed hold of the soldier “if you don’t get out there and fight I’ll shoot you myself.” He looked over to see Lieutenants Marik and Malik shooting with an insane look in their eyes, not caring if they got hit or not.
All of a sudden there was an enormous blast not more than twenty metres from his position, he took cover but he was covered by dirt that was flung into the air by the blast. There was a lot of dust and smoke but there was also an eerie silence that had followed, “is anyone there?” he yelled out but there was no answer, the silence continued for a few more moments when the dust and smoke began to clear and he could hear the voices of Malik and Marik.
When he looked up everyone in his platoon was gone, only pieces of bodies lay on the ground around them, Malik and Marik crawled through the debris toward Bakura “are you alright Bakura?” they asked. But he just lay there looking out toward the battlefield shocked, “they’re all gone, they’re all gone,” he said quietly, “it’s all my fault, I should have called a retreat.”
Bakura was pulled out of his thoughts by the sound of Mai’s voice over the ships intercom, “captain Bakura your needed on the bridge.” But he still sat there holding his glass of Darvellian Ale not registering what had just been said, “Captain we need you here now,” came the voice again. He got up and put the glass down on his side table then headed toward the bridge.
“What’s the situation?” he said as he walked into the room, “we have come across another ship in this vicinity, we have tried to hale them but there has been no answer yet.” Mai said as she showed him on the radar screen, “can you take us in closer Malik?” Bakura asked as he looked up.
“Yeah not a problem cap, if it’s not worth salvaging can I blow it up?” He said with a hint of excitement in his voice. “Let’s just wait and see, we have to establish that it is deserted and then board her,” Bakura said calmly, “yeah yeah, I know, procedure,” Malik said sarcastically.
“It looks like it has been drifting for a while,” Mai said, “How can you tell?” asked Marik looking out of the porthole as they made a pass of the ship, “it’s easy, just look at all the marks on its hull, they are to shallow to have been hit at any thruster speed so obviously they were made while it has been slowly drifting through space, dumbass!”
“So you’re not just here for your looks after all?” Malik said while snickering, “I’ll give you just for looks, by the time I’m finished with you Marik will have to put a bag on your face when taking you to bed you” she was cut off.
“Will you two cut it out we need supplies and this old thing could do with some new parts, now Mai scan the ship for life forms and if there are none then lets find a hatch to board the thing,” Bakura said sternly looking at the both of them then back over the ship outside.
“There are no life forms captain, should we proceed with boarding her?” asked Mai, “yes, have you found a hatch Malik?”
“We are coming up on it now, do you want me to go ahead with the docking?” Bakura paused for a minute and just stared at the ship, “captain…Bakura do you want me to?” Bakura cut him off “yes, go ahead Malik dock.” He proceeded with the docking and it wasn’t long before the two ships touched with a thud and the sound of metal grinding together, ”we have a good seal sir” Marik said looking at the monitor in front of him, ”excellent Malik, good job as usual everyone now lets see what we can find, suit up and be ready to board in five minutes, Malik you stay here and keep an eye on things” Bakura said with anticipation in his voice.
The hatch creaked as they made their way into the foreign ship, “are you sure this seal is secure?” Bakura asked Malik over the headset in his helmet, “Yes, it’s fine keep going” he replied. They were all dressed in air tight suits that were cream in colour, the helmets had a big visor that allowed a 180 degree view and they were all equipped with photon pistols that would put a hole in a person the size of a grapefruit.
“Ok, Mai you find engineering and try to get this sucker going, or at least give me lights and life support.” Bakura commanded, “yes captain, I’ll see what I can do but this thing is pretty old and worse for ware.” She replied doubtfully. “If anyone can do it you can, after all that’s why your part of this crew, only the best remember” he said laughingly.
“Marik, you find the cargo bays and see if they had anything of value aboard, also check out the sleeping quarters to see if there is anything of value in them, you know to trade with” he said as he motioned for him to go, “no problem, I’ll get right on it” he said as he walked off down a passageway.
Bakura made his way to the bridge to see if he could find some reason why this ship was abandoned, when he got there he noticed that it was empty, meaning no bodies or sign of people at all. He was looking around when the lights came on “thank you Mai, I see you haven’t lost your touch,” he said with a grin on his face.
“We should have life support in about twenty minutes or so I will let you know when it’s safe to take off your helmets” she said rather satisfied with herself. She was looking around engineering when she noticed that the ship still had half its fuel cells in tact and the other ones were just used up as normal.
Marik made his way into one of the sleeping quarters and found some clothes and personal things but nothing of value, he searched the rest of them but no luck as there was nothing in them either, he continued to the cargo bay and when he got there he found a craft that was just small enough to fit inside the bay. He moved in closer and saw that this craft was not as old as the ship they were on, “hey captain, I found another ship in cargo bay one, it is newer than this ship and looks to be more advanced” Marik said as he looked over the hull of the ship.
“Ok I’ll be there as soon as I finish up here, don’t touch it until I get there, just check out the rest of the bays and I will meet you and Mai there in about twenty minutes, ok?” Bakura said still looking over the bridge, “ok, you’re the boss, boss” Marik replied. Bakura looked over the instruments and after pressing a few buttons and looking through a few files realised that the ships basic functions were still in tact.
“Ok guys the good news is life support is now working and it’s ok to take off your helmets, but the bad news is these engines are dead, they must have been hit by some kind of blaster fire as the circuits are all fried and it would take me a month just to work out what’s, what” Mai said holding her head with both hands a little frustrated. “Ok Mai, make your way to the cargo bay now and I’ll meet you there shortly” Bakura replied.
Bakura entered the cargo bay to the sight of Mai and Marik walking around the craft, “It looks to be Termastian by the markings on the side here” Mai said pointing at them as she walked around the left side. “It has also taken a beating from blaster fire and it’s doubtful that it would run” she commented looking at the blaster marks on the rear of hull and thrusters. “How much do you think it would be worth how it is?” Bakura asked with greediness in his voice.
“I don’t know maybe 15, 20 000 certas” Marik said with uncertainty, “but how the hell are we going to get it to a dealer? I mean our cargo bays are not big enough to put this in,” he also pointed out. “Well first it’s not far to Stratoes where we can get a good price for it and we don’t have to put it in our bay, cause we are going to tow it” Bakura said smugly.
