Light Amongst Shadows

Author’s Note – It’s me again. I must really be insane to add yet another tale to this web site when I haven’t finished the others yet. However, my muses are incredibly stubborn and two of them insisted on putting this on paper despite the fact that I needed to update my other three stories. I hate it when they resort to blackmail to get what they want! The coupling is a little different this time around as I usually go yami/hikari pairings, but not this time! This is a yaoi story, so if that isn’t your thing, you might not want to read this. If not, hang on tight because the muses have a lot planned for everyone! Hugs and hellos to my two best friends – DracOnyx and ladywolf_Terri!

Disclaimer – I don’t own YuGiOh or any of the characters associated with it. If I did, I’d have the money to do what my muses want and wouldn’t be so darned stressed out all of the time!

Chapter One – Sunshine in Domino?

It was one of those rare spring days that showcased the true beauty of Domino. Sun poured down onto the inhabitants of the city, chasing away the chill that had settled during the long winter. Spring in Domino tended to be wet and blustery, so everyone had decided to take advantage of the break in the storms and enjoy the warm sunshine while it lasted.

The weather wasn’t the only thing that could be considered rare in Domino. The rare glimpse of sunshine had brought out a group that was rarely seen all together. Usually the group was incomplete because of the absence of several people, namely two of the yamis, but somehow, the hikaris had managed to convince them to accompany the group of friends to the park to enjoy a day of games and food.

Mahogany colored eyes looked up when the owner of them heard the shrieks of laughter coming from his white haired hikari. Ryou had taken the Frisbee and was holding it out of the reach of the shorter tri-colored haired hikari. Both amethyst and chocolate colored eyes were dancing with laughter as they playfully fought with each other over the plastic toy.

Both teenagers had been spending more time with each other lately, each of them using the excuse that most of their group had paired off into couples, leaving them as one of the few who had yet to fall under the curse of ‘spring fever.’ Bakura knew that it was simply an excuse on his hikari’s part and wondered if his soul partner would ever make a move on the one who had claimed his heart.

A soft chuckle pulled the thief from his thoughts, and he turned his head to find the crimson-eyed yami watching the two teens play. The sound of mirth was rare for the smaller yami, and it made the thief wonder what was going on underneath the wild spikes of tri-colored hair. As if sensing his eyes on him, the former pharaoh tipped his head in a slight nod before addressing Bakura.

“Those two are cute together.”

Bakura shrugged before answering Yami, his gaze returning to the two hikaris in question.

“Yeah, if you like that sappy sweet type of thing. I’m thinking they need to fuck and get it out of their systems before they give someone a tooth ache.”

Yami’s brow arched for a long moment and looking over at the shorter yami, Bakura could swear he saw the crimson eyes twinkle with suppressed merriment before he answered him.

“So Ryou has a thing for my hikari?”

Bakura shrugged, not completely understanding why he was actually talking to the man he’d despised for so long.

“Yeah, he’s been interested in him for a while now. He’s just been too shy to act on it, too worried that the runt wouldn’t share his interest. The last thing Ryou wants is to do something that would ruin their friendship.”

Yami adjusted a wristband before answering the thief, keenly aware that he was about to do something his hikari would probably kill him for if he ever found out. However, the two teenagers’ happiness was important to him and he would do whatever he thought was necessary to see to it that their happiness had a chance to grow.

“Yugi’s had feelings for Ryou for quite some time. Any overture made by your hikari would be happily accepted by mine.”

Bakura crossed his arms over his chest, focusing his attention on the former pharaoh. Something about Yami’s words had grabbed his interest for a moment, and he was curious about what his rival had meant.

“Yugi won’t make the first move?”

“No, he won’t. It’s not in his nature.”

Curious despite himself, the thief had to question Yami’s answer. Something about his words just didn’t make sense.

“What do you mean?”

“The collar isn’t decorative, Bakura. There’s a damn good reason he wears it.”

At that cryptic answer, the tri-color haired yami walked away, leaving Bakura to ponder his words. It didn’t take long for him to figure out what Yami meant and he sighed, knowing that he would need to share this discovery with his hikari. Despite the rough start at the beginning of their yami/hikari relationship, Ryou meant a lot to the yami and his happiness was important to him.

That night, after calling for some take out due to his exhaustion, Ryou flopped onto the couch, smiling absently as his yami walked into the living room. Bakura noticed the smile and questioned the smaller teenager.

“Food on its way?”

“Yeah. I ordered our usual pizza. That sound good?”

Bakura nodded, sitting down next to his hikari, pulling him into a one armed hug before propping his feet up on the coffee table in front of the sofa.

“Have a good time today, Ryou?”

Ryou smiled wider, curling one leg beneath him as he got comfortable. He leaned his head against his yami’s chest, enjoying the warmth that radiated from Bakura. Now that things had finally worked out between his yami and himself, the white haired teenager really enjoyed the times he spent with Bakura. Snuggling with him had turned into one of his favorite activities and although the thief never said a word about it, he knew that his yami also enjoyed their time together.

“I really did. It was nice spending time with Yugi, even if it was with the others around. I wish he and I could have some time alone, but I don’t know if he’d ever agree to anything like that.”

“Actually, I had a talk with the pharaoh today.”

Chocolate colored eyes focused in on the white haired yami, a look of curiosity filling them. Bakura could tell that Ryou was interested in what he was about to say and relished the opportunity to surprise him.

“About?”

“You and his hikari. Apparently, according to the pharaoh, any move you make would be accepted by the midget.”

Ryou’s reply was almost automatic, and then the soft voice sharpened when he realized what Bakura had just said. The thief nearly laughed, amused by his hikari’s reaction to his words.

“He’s not a midget, Bakura, so be nice. Wait a minute, what do you mean any move would be accepted?”

“If the pharaoh is to be believed, his hikari has a thing for you but won’t do anything about it. I have an idea why but the point is, hikari mine, if you want him, you’d better make your move.”

There was a thoughtful expression that crossed Ryou’s face for a brief moment before it was burnt out by a huge smile.

“You think so?”

“As much as I hate to admit it, the hedgehog is not one to lie to anyone, even me or Marik. If he says it, he means it. The question is now, what are you going to do with this news? Any ideas, Ryou?”

Ryou was obviously distracted by the news as he didn’t comment on Bakura calling Yami a hedgehog. Usually, he would reprimand him for that.

“Some but nothing definite. Maybe I’ll invite him out to dinner, just the two of us, and see how it goes from there.”

“That might be a good start. Are you going to call him?”

The answer Ryou gave was somewhat vague, telling Bakura that his hikari was extremely nervous about all of this.

“In a while.”

That usually meant that he would probably talk himself out of calling, which would only serve to increase his anxiety. Bakura grinned deviously and rose from the couch, grabbing the cordless off of the base. Ryou’s eyes widened as he realized what his yami was up to. He nearly shrieked as strong fingers dialed in the number that had become so familiar to both of them.

“Kura, no!”

The grin only widened as he sidestepped his hikari’s attempts to take the phone away from him. It was difficult to keep his voice even when Yugi’s grandfather answered the phone. Ryou’s antics were amusing him, and it pleased him to no end to know that he’d finally gotten one up on his soul partner.

“Good evening, Mr. Mutou. Is Yugi available? Yes, please tell him that Ryou would like to speak with him.”

After a moment, Bakura handed him the phone. His mahogany eyes both encouraged and threatened, telling the chocolate-eyed hikari that he had better take the step and not let his fears overpower him.

“Hi Yugi, it’s Ryou.”

A cheerful voice greeted him, bringing a smile to his face. No matter what the circumstances, Yugi’s voice always managed to cheer him up.

“Hi, Ryou. How are you doing?”

“I’m doing fine, Yugi. I was wondering, are you busy tomorrow night?”

There was a slight pause before the amethyst-eyed hikari answered. There was a note of hope that Ryou detected within the usual sunny tones of his friend’s voice. That encouraged him to push forward, hoping that Bakura was right about Yugi’s feelings towards him.

“No, I don’t have any plans for tomorrow night.”

“I was hoping that you and I could have dinner together tomorrow night.”

Ryou’s eyes closed, and he unconsciously sank his teeth into his bottom lip as he waited for Yugi’s answer. Bakura reached over and took one of his hands, squeezing it gently in encouragement.

“I’d love that, Ryou.”

The breath he’d been holding was released in a softly released sigh. Bakura grinned, realizing that the invitation had been accepted. It was good to see that something was going right for Ryou and he plopped onto the couch, listening to the rest of the conversation.

“I’ll pick you up at seven. That sound all right?”

“That sounds fine, Ryou. I’m looking forward to it.”

“As am I, Yugi. I’ll see you then.”

Ryou ended the call and flopped backwards onto the couch, staring up at the ceiling with an incredulous expression on his face.

“Well?”

“He said yes. I can’t believe it. He said yes! Oh sweet Isis, what am I going to wear? Where do I take him?”

Ryou began fussing and trying to plan, his mind rapidly going over details. Bakura closed his eyes, biting back a groan of frustration. Holy Ra, he couldn’t wait until those two finally got together and started fucking. Maybe then his hikari would actually calm down and stop worrying so damn much!

Author’s End Note – Okay, that wound up being interesting. I’m wondering where this is going. The muses are being stubbornly quiet about this one. I’ve a feeling I know but can’t wait to see how this ends. I hope all of you enjoyed it and will be back for the next chapter. Please leave a review and let me know what you think about this chapter!
