Chapter 1: Stepping In The World

Ryou walked downstairs stretching as he rubbed his eyes. It was morning and he was in his last year of Domino High School...and already a father. His girlfriend didn't want the baby, so he and his yami took her in. What more could he say? He loved his daughter that much. He turned his life around to raise her. Bakura, on the other hand, was still getting used to being called Daddy constantly.

Five years have passed and yet his koi still couldn't get used to the word?

Bakura sat downstairs on the couch getting little Kali ready for her first day of preschool. The only way she'd sit still was to put in a tape of The Lion King and she'd do anything you tell her. Ryou chuckled at the sight. "Papa, I'm going to school like a big girl!" Kali said proudly. Her smile was enough to melt even the cold hearted.

Ryou chuckled and kissed her forehead. "That's good, baby," he said. "Let Daddy finish getting you ready." She nodded and turned toward the TV again singing Hakuna Matata suddenly. Bakura finished brushing her long white hair and braided it. "Stand up a minute, sweetheart," he said seriously. She did so and he tied her sneakers and straightened her shirt on her body. She had on a purple baby doll t-shirt with the word Princess written in silver letters and Capri jeans with butterflies on them. Her chocolate brown eyes studied him a moment and she smiled. "Someone's got a loose tooth," he noticed. "Want me to pull it for you?" Kali shook her head. "Bakura, don't scare her," Ryou said drinking some strong coffee as he gathered his things for school.

"I'm a tomb robber," Bakura chuckled. "It's my job." "Not our daughter, koi," Ryou said sternly. The doorbell rang and Ryou opened it to see Yugi Moto and Yami standing there. "Uncle Yugi!" Kali shouted running to them and hugging them. "I'm going to school today!" Yami chuckled and lifted her in his arms. "How did you convince them to do that?" he asked rubbing noses with her. "It's actually preschool," Ryou explained. "She has to go despite what anyone says." Bakura stood up and stretched. "I have to get to work," he said seriously and kissed Kali on the cheek. "Daddy will pick you up later, ok?" he said. Kali nodded her head. "Bye, baby," he said and kissed Ryou gently on the lips. Then he grabbed his keys and left.

Yami shook his head. "I didn't think I'd live to see the day that he'd be so damn responsible," he said seriously. Ryou gave a dry laugh. "Right," he said sarcastically. "His idea of work here is just shove the dishes in the dishwasher without rinsing them off and letting the laundry wash itself." Yugi chuckled. "I think he's still getting used to things," he said. "He hasn't been in the modern world that long like Yami." Yami rolled his eyes and sighed. "Well, time to get the little one off," Ryou said looking at his watch. "Come here, baby." He lifted Kali in his arms and grabbed his keys locking the house and the four left.

After taking Kali to the preschool and practically having to pry her strong little hands off his waist so he could leave, Ryou, Yami, and Yugi drove to Domino High School to see Joey Wheeler and Seto Kaiba already waiting for them. "You guys are rather late," Kaiba noticed with a slight frown. His arm was draped around Joey's waist causing the blond to smile. "Sorry," Yugi said. "Kal's first day at preschool." Joey chuckled. "The little tyke finally has her day, huh?" he teased. Ryou nodded. "Knowing her, she'll shy away a little before coming out of her shell," he said. "She acts too much like me." "Better you than Bakura," Kaiba said seriously. Ryou nodded. Tristan Taylor and Duke Devlin joined the group smiling. "Last year at Domino High, boys," the raven haired boy said seriously. "Anyone got plans?" "I do," Tristan said whispering something in his ear causing Duke to blush like mad.

Yugi chuckled. "I was planning on college," he said seriously. "I inherited a lot from Grampa after he died and I plan on studying Egyptian history." Yami's eyes widened suddenly. "I didn't give him the idea, so don't lay it on me," the former pharaoh said seriously. Joey laughed. "I'm plannin' on travelin' more," he said seriously. Kaiba chuckled. "With me, of course, mutt," he said smiling. Ryou smiled. "I have my plans already here," he said seriously. "This summer, Bakura and I plan to take Kali to Egypt and look around. Bakura's been threatening me if we don't." "Then threaten back," Tristan said. "I wish," Ryou said rolling his eyes.

At the preschool, Kali sat at her desk studying the coloring sheet in front of her. She sighed and began to color without a word. She felt something hit her head and looked down to see a balled up piece of paper there. She turned around and saw some students giggling about it. She frowned and continued to work when another one hit her this time with a little hard object inside. "Stop it," she said looking at the students. "Stop it!" one mocked and they laughed even harder. Kali sighed and tried her best to hold her temper in. At lunch, it was even worse as the group hit her with grapes. Tears slid down her cheeks and she ran out of the classroom and hid in the coat closet crying.

That afternoon, Bakura arrived and looked around for her frowning. The teacher led him in the hallway and sighed. "She hasn't come out of the coat closet all afternoon," she explained. "She won't tell me what's wrong and just cries." "She's probably scared since it is her first day," he said. "Probably so," the teacher sighed. "Maybe she'll come out knowing you're here, Mr. Bakura." She led the way and opened the closet. "Kali, guess who's here," she said smiling. Kali sniffed and looked up to see Bakura standing there. "Come on, sweetheart," he said kneeling down to her height. "Come here." She ran in his arms sobbing as he held her close. "We'll talk when we get home," he whispered as he lifted her in his arms and gathered her things. "She's a sweet child," the teacher said. "I don't know what happened at all." "She has a habit of not saying when something or someone's bothering her," Bakura sighed. "She takes after Ryou too much at times. See you tomorrow." She nodded and they left.

Once home, Bakura sat down on the couch with Kali in his arms. "Talk to Daddy," he said seriously. "What happened over there?" She sniffed and looked at him. "They started throwing things at me and made fun of me," she said tears sliding down her cheeks. "Throwing things at you?" he asked frowning. She nodded. "They threw grapes and paper balls with metal things in them," she said. "Then they called me names even when I was in the closet. They called me stupid and ugly and..." She began crying all over again. He sighed and rocked her in his arms. "Shh," he whispered kissing her hair gently. "Do you really think you're those things?" She shook her head. "Then does it matter what they think about you?" he asked. "You shouldn't let bullies bother you like that. The next time it happens, tell your teacher. She seems to really like you." She sniffed and nodded. He wiped her tears away and held her close.

Ryou came home and Bakura relayed what happened to him. "Kids can be so cruel," he said frowning. "I know, but she got a bit upset by it," Bakura sighed. "She's very sensitive, Bakura," Ryou said seriously. "She can't help it." Bakura sighed. He glanced over at Kali, who was playing in her play area. "Maybe things will get better," he said seriously. "She has yet to make friends." "I know," Ryou sighed. The doorbell rang and Bakura opened it to see Joey and Kaiba there to join Ryou with homework. "Dere she is!" Joey said and lifted Kali in his arms. "How's my favorite girl?" he asked. She shook her head resting it on his chest. "Hard first day," Ryou explained. "Poor baby," Kaiba said and smiled. "Uncle Kaiba has something for you." Kali looked up then. "Honestly, Kaiba, you're spoiling her too much!" Ryou said seriously, but he was smiling as well. Kaiba held up a toy cat and smiled. Kali took it in her arms and hugged it happily. "What do you say?" Bakura asked. "Thank you, Uncle Kaiba," she said automatically. Joey chuckled and kissed her cheek. "Maybe we should have kids, moneybags," he said. Kaiba paled at the idea. "I'll think about it," he said.

Kali slid off Joey's lap and sat down on the couch. "Daddy, can I watch TV?" she asked. Bakura sighed and took the remote to change it to some cartoons. "After dinner, you have to take a bath," he said. "I know," she said her eyes glued to the screen. Her favorite cartoon, The Powerpuff Girls, was on and she grinned hugging her new toy close. Joey watched her a moment and smiled. "At least you get her to do other things than watchin' TV all day," he said. "Believe me, she would given the chance," Ryou said seriously as he began to fix dinner. "We just got her interested in Duel Monsters and she'll watch me and Bakura duel and try to help both of us." Kaiba chuckled. "Oh, Bakura, I forgot to tell you," he said. "The Domino Museum is doing another Ancient Egypt thing this weekend." Bakura perked up then. "Sounds interesting," he said seriously. "What do you think, Ry?"

Ryou looked up and nodded. "We'll take Kal and see how she likes it," he said. "We'll come and get the others to join in," Kaiba said. "Make an outing of sorts out of it." Ryou nodded. Kali frowned suddenly and walked to Bakura whispering something in his ear. "Now?" he asked. She nodded and he lifted her in his arms. "Excuse us, gentlemen," he said. "The potty calls." Joey chuckled as they left the room. "She's attached to Bakura," Ryou said chuckling. "She knows if she wants something, he'll do it while I probably won't." "Someone has to have some stronghold here," Joey said. Ryou nodded. "Bakura would let her jump off a bridge if she asked him," he chuckled. "I guess that's why she's ddy\ddy's Girl at times." Kaiba chuckled and nodded.

After dinner, Joey, Kaiba, and Ryou got to homework and Bakura carried Kali upstairs for her bath. Amist all the toys and bubbles, he managed to get her bathed without getting too wet and then dried her off before putting her in her little pink pajamas. "Go tell Papa and your uncles good night," he said and she ran downstairs hugging Ryou close. "Night, Papa," she said as he kissed her cheek. "Good night, baby," he said. Sheged ged the others and got the same reaction before running to Bakura and he lifted her in his arms carrying her to her room. He sat down in a rocking chair with her in his lap and grabbed a book to read her a story. In the middle of the chapter, he looked down and noticed she had her thumb in her mouth asleep clutching her kitty. He smiled and carried her to her bed and tucked her in kissing her forehead. He then turned on the nightlight and walked downstairs.

"Malik and Marik called," Ryou said seriously. "They're coming back from their visit." The two were their housemates and helped care for Kali as well. "And I was enjoying the peace," Bakura teased. He looked over to the couch to see Kaiba and Joey asleep together. "Kal asleep?" Ryou asked. "Out like a light," Bakura said locking the house up. "I need some sleep then," Ryou said yawning. "Once they get back, you and I can have time alone." Bakura smiled and nodded as they walked upstairs.
