This story is coming along great! Is the thing your working on is Jou's biological mother? While I admit it is a big mystery to the reader, I can also see how tough it would be to write her in since it is a big curve ball and there is no mention of her in the original series to work from. Maybe you should have her happen before Jou was born and she died or something, if you decide to work on it.
